61. Kundalini Yoga, or the yoga of consciousness
For this episode, I actually wanted to invite an expert in Kundalini yoga. And as luck would have it, whether for lack of time or because of other projects that were a priority, I could not do this episode with the experts I wanted to invite and it is going to be me who will mainly talk to you about my feelings regarding Kundalini yoga.
It is true that I have recently become a Kundalini yoga teacher, but I honestly did not feel really confident talking to you about this method that I have only known for four years.
But well, if luck had it that it would be me, it must be worth sharing my perspective, my opinion on this method. We agree that all approaches to yoga, whether Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga or yin yoga, have a holistic approach to the body, that is, these methods make it possible to balance body and mind and there is no fixed barrier between the one and the other.
For me (and it is necessarily subjective) with Kundalini yoga I have never seen a yoga that has had as much impact on me, whether on my physical body or on my mind or my emotional side.
If you want to deepen your knowledge of Kundalini yoga, I recommend 2 books. The first is the book of my yoga teacher Guru Jagat, who is unfortunately no longer of this world, but who wrote a magnificent book called Pour une vie invincible and also the book by Caroline Benezet, Kundalini and Me.
I apologize in advance to yoginis more experienced than me if I make a wrong interpretation or if I perhaps mix up concepts.

The yoga of consciousness
Kundalini yoga is called the yoga of consciousness because it is the yoga that is supposed to awaken the energy of the Kundalini, an energy also called life energy or divine feminine energy Shakti. This energy is supposed to be housed in our root chakra, so between the sacrum and the perineum, roughly in the middle. When this energy awakens, it rises like a snake through our different chakras to finally reach the crown chakra. This is a rather simplified explanation, because in reality this energy makes several round trips in the body. How is it interesting or important to awaken your Kundalini energy? I find it rather complicated, at least for me, to understand the impact it can have. And for that, I like the definition Guru Jagat gave in her book Pour une vie invincible. She says that Kundalini yoga allows you to live an amplified life, in the positive sense of the term of course. I tried to understand why she said that and I explain it through these 5 points: • The first point is that it works on your nervous system and makes it capable of eliminating what it has stored, but also of taking on and processing a greater quantity of information, a greater quantity of stressors. And let’s say that in today’s society, with the avalanche of information, the number of tasks we must face and the acceleration of the pace of life, this is still a quite appreciated capacity. • The second point is that it helps the endocrine system, your hormonal system, to regulate better and therefore necessarily to be able to better eliminate all the toxins from the body, to regenerate you better. And let’s say that this too is an important point because we have a more polluted environment, we are more exposed to junk food, to toxins we can put on the skin, etc. • The third point is that Kundalini yoga helps you become aware of and consciously direct your thoughts. She says in her book that the mind really needs to be trained to become aware of and recognize thoughts so that we can choose them more and more consciously. And I think that this is an extremely important capacity, knowing that we have roughly 60,000 thoughts a day, most of which are somewhat unconscious. And it is work that Kundalini yoga makes it possible to do through meditation. • The fourth point is that it works on your energy system, your chakras, but also your so-called subtle bodies and this impacts what you attract in your life. I will detail this later. • The last point, a little more esoteric I admit, is that the more you practice Kundalini yoga, at least this is my experience, the more you develop subtle qualities. I have the impression that since I have been practicing Kundalini yoga, I have more and more intuition really about myself, about what is going to happen or what others feel, so this feeling has really been amplified with my Kundalini practice. Since I have been practicing Kundalini yoga, I also experience quite incredible coincidences. The link with your emotional bathtub
I often give this bathtub example to explain your emotional balance. The tap of this bathtub, so what fills the bathtub with water, is the repetitive patterns you have that come from your past and that every time they repeat, generate over-reactions that fill your bathtub, and these over-reactions are activated in your body, in your autonomic nervous system, and not in your head. When you deprogram your patterns it is as if you close the tap of this bathtub. The first time you do it there is always water in your bathtub which represents all the emotions you could not process in your past and which remained stored in your body, and then all the current situations in which you did not manage to regulate your emotions will contribute to filling the water of your bathtub. This will have an impact on your ability to bounce back in the face of situations. As soon as something happens in your life, it will add water to your bathtub which makes it overflow faster. You can empty this storage with breathing techniques and notably the Breathwork technique that I explained in episode 21 with the Breathmaster from whom I obtained my Breathwork certification, Brian Kelly. Kundalini yoga also helps empty this surplus. I would say that the difference for me between Breathwork and Kundalini yoga is that Breathwork is a breathing method that will help you empty a lot but not necessarily in a targeted way. That is, the body will release what it needs to release in the order it chooses. Whereas Kundalini yoga will allow you a gentler and more regular release and depending on the yoga set or the type of breathing you do, you will target what you want to release. The last advantage of Kundalini yoga compared to Breathwork is that, if I keep using this bathtub example, it will work on the quality of your bathtub, so the enamel of the bathtub, the shape of the bathtub if you like, it will give back full health and full capacity to your nervous system and increase its resistance to stress. It will give back full health to your endocrine system and will rebalance the fluids of the brain and your neural connections. The goal of Kundalini yoga is to give back full health to all the systems of your body. And it even goes beyond your bathtub. It also works on the room, on your bathroom, that is, your system of thoughts, your energy, your destiny and your spiritual connection to the universe or to God depending on whether or not you have a belief system in this area. So you see that Kundalini yoga really has a multidimensional effect and I think that is why I feel so much impact. Another of my Kundalini yoga teachers, Harijiwan, compares human beings to a computer and says that human beings do not have a computer problem (the body) but often a processor problem (nervous system), that is, a lack of speed with which we manage to process the information or the difficulties of life that we receive and also a problem of the quantity of information we manage to handle at the same time. He says they also have a software problem, that is, the set of thoughts and the set of emotions through which we see things. For him, Kundalini yoga makes it possible to upgrade our processor and also our software. I find this illustration quite telling, especially for those who are a little more rational. I really experienced this upgrade during my first Kundalini retreat. I came across an image of a three-day retreat that Guru Jagat was offering at Rama in her institute in Mallorca. I went and within three days, I experienced so many changes in my hormonal balance, in my physical balance, on the esoteric level, on the energetic level that it was enough for me to decide to start the yoga teacher training at the Rama Institute which is located either in Mallorca, in Los Angeles or in New York. I am a yoga teacher but I do not offer Kundalini yoga classes in a studio. I really offer it as a tool in coaching so that the participants of my program learn to self-regulate.A regulation tool for your nervous system
The most powerful tool that can influence your nervous system is your breathing. Depending on how you breathe, you can activate your sympathetic system or on the contrary activate your parasympathetic system and go into relaxation. I give you two quite simple examples of Kundalini yoga breathing. The first is the anger points exercise where you breathe through the mouth and make rather abrupt movements. And you will see that this will rather activate your sympathetic system and will help you express this anger. And if you want to experience the total opposite, we do something that will really rather activate your parasympathetic system, the one that allows you to relax. You can try four-count breathing where you inhale for four counts through the nose and exhale for four counts through the nose, so it goes something like this. Try practicing this breathing for three minutes and you will see that in only three minutes, you manage to reach a certain state of relaxation.
The second way Kundalini yoga uses to influence your nervous system is through physical practice. Kundalini yoga has rather funny physical movements. There are rhythms that are gentler, there are rhythms that are more abrupt and all these rhythms are of a certain duration, with a certain number of breaths to really create an effect on your nervous system. Har Har aerobics for example is a sequence of rather funny, rather jerky movements.

A regulation tool for your endocrine system
The first tool Kundalini Yoga uses for this purpose is mantras. These are different chants that you recite during the Kundalini yoga session and by chanting/reciting precisely certain sounds while moving your tongue you activate meridians at the level of your palate. It is a bit as if you press the keys of a keyboard which will influence the secretions of very important glands that are masters of the endocrine system such as the hypothalamus, the pineal gland and the pituitary gland or hypophysis which in fact control almost all the hormonal secretions of the body. One of my favorite mantras is the mantra Ra ma da sa sa se so hung sung by White Sun which is really a music that I advise you to listen to and of course to recite. It is a healing mantra to be recited between three minutes and 31 minutes. And I encourage you to experiment and to see the effect it has on you. When I recite this mantra, I feel like a balm in my heart. The second way to regulate the endocrine system is also movement, notably all the movements that move the fluids in the brain and those that activate the thyroid.
An exercise that is quite simple and easy and that makes it possible to regulate hormonal balance every day is to do the three-minute movement called dog cow. It is a movement that is also practiced in other yogas. The difference in Kundalini yoga is that you must touch your heels and that you can allow yourself a rather fast movement during the three minutes. If you feel headaches or a kind of heat at the level of the throat, it is often an indicator that you have an imbalance at the level of the thyroid. It is a great exercise for all people who suffer from hormonal changes (premenstrual syndrome, postpartum, pre-menopause, menopause…)
A tool to influence your system of thoughts
Once again, mantras have an effect. The word mantra simply means waves of thoughts or directions of thoughts. Just listening to mantras will help you direct the quantity of thoughts you have every day. We also talk about the importance of the repetition of these mantras which we call jappa. So depending on the number of times you repeat a mantra, it will have a greater impact. So typically, it is always recommended to repeat a mantra eleven times, because this repetition multiplies the impact of the mantra you do. If you want to try another mantra, here is my second favorite mantra, the mantra Sa Re Sa, Sa it is a mantra that you can repeat for 40 days at a rate of 30 minutes a day to help you free yourself from negativity, from obstacles and also facilitate your ability to communicate. The second way to influence your system of thoughts is meditation which allows you to observe your thoughts and change perspective. Meditations in Kundalini Yoga are often accompanied by two things:
• The focusing of your eyes or Dhristi. You have several positions for your eyes when you do the meditation, such as the third eye, the tip of the nose, on your chin, the crown chakra and depending on the position this will help you direct your thoughts in a certain direction.
• The mudras, that is, the hand positions that allow you to activate certain parts of the brain.
One of the meditations that I find particularly effective in Kundalini yoga, as well as passing on to my son, is a meditation called Sa Ta Na Ma where you change the position of the hands with each mantra you recite and where you say the mantra in different intensities of voice. You first recite the mantra in a normal voice, in a faint voice as well, then just inwardly. This meditation helps with memory, concentration problems and the cognitive functions of the brain.
Otherwise, if you have the impression of having a lot of thoughts, well I invite you to try the meditation for obsessive thoughts that I explain in episode 54 of the podcast.
A tool to influence your energy system
Kundalini yoga impacts your chakras and this includes your aura and subtle bodies.
The subtle bodies are like energy layers that you have in addition to your body:
• The soul. It is the vibration that you keep beyond time and space.
• Then, we have three thought bodies: the negative thought body, the positive thought body and the neutral thought body. In Kundalini yoga, it is said that we need to have a balance of these three to move forward as well as possible in life.
• The physical body
• We have the Arcline. I do not know how to say it in French, but it is everything related to our incarnation and also the gifts we may have.
• The aura, so, which is really the energy center that emanates from the functioning of our different chakras.
• The pranic body, which is the one that contains our life force.
• The subtle body is the body that will remain, even beyond death, like our soul.
• And the last body is our radiance, it is the energy layer that works on what we attract and what we project into our life and that creates opportunities for us.
Kundalini yoga has an impact on these different energy bodies through the movements we make (mainly of the arms). I cannot really explain why it works, I can only testify that it works.
I see it notably in the yoga sets that I offer in the two small workshops that I offer at the summer solstice and the winter solstice because these really work on these energy bodies. The first workshop is called Summer of Love which I offer in June for the summer solstice and acts on your ability to shine. And the second workshop is the twelve-day ritual which I offer on 21 December for the winter solstice to manifest what you desire in the following year.
And every time we do these sets it is quite impressive. The majority of people, not necessarily all, feel that it makes a change.
So rather than believing me, if you feel like trying this esoteric side of Kundalini yoga, I am giving you two sets that are, for me, particularly ones that work a lot on this energetic and attraction aspect.
The first set is Green Energy and Opportunity. This set will attract opportunities into your life.
The second set is called Subgah kriya to attract wealth and abundance into your life.
To give you a personal example, every time I do a yoga retreat in the presence of my yoga teachers at Rama. They have an incredible energy that you feel just through their presence.
And every time quite extraordinary things often happen to me, I attract many clients at once or interviews or all of a sudden I am told you give off something special. I have not literally changed, but by working on my energy intensively during these days, well I really see an impact on what I project or what I ultimately attract into my life. So there you go, it is not scientific proof but just a personal experience.
The other point, on the energetic aspect, I find that it works on everything that is spiritual or karmic blockage if this is part of your belief system. And for this purpose, there are many things available in Kundalini yoga to clean this karma, to clean a bit this karmic heritage that we may have accumulated in other lives or transgenerationally from our family.
There is a first meditation called Wahe Guru Wahe jio that Lilly Barbery did on her Instagram. In this 30-minute meditation you make a movement above your arms imagining that you are cleaning yourself with water to clean your karma.
There is also the mantra called Bahota Karam that you can recite eleven times or 25 times to clean your karma.
And finally there is a practice in Kundalini yoga called Long Eek Ong Kar which is to be done for 40 days before the summer solstice. This meditation lasts 2 and a half hours every day and you have a very precise mantra and breathing to do. By doing this meditation you are supposed to clean your karma and the karma of all the people you know.
So I must say that I did it and that it was quite impressive. There were effects that I was able to feel. Once again here, I am totally in the esoteric.
A tool to release your anger toward God
One day, Guru Jagat tells us “we are going to work on your anger toward God”. I am someone who believes in God, I pray a lot, I even had the feeling that I was often protected in certain difficult moments of my life, such as the time I almost found myself on the street and at that moment I had two little miracle calls that kept me off the street. So I never had the impression of being angry toward God. So when she said we are going to work on our anger toward God, I was rather calm, I did not feel that it concerned me. And during the yoga set, I started to cry like crazy. It was really impressive. I did not think that so many things were going to come out. Afterwards, I realized that the more you believe in God, the more you can unconsciously develop anger or bitterness about the negative things that have happened in your life. Because it is a concept that is still quite difficult to understand humanly. Why there can be at the same time a loving and protective God who is there for you and how you can have certain difficulties or injustices in life.
I think that on a human scale it is human not to understand it totally and that ultimately, the more you are a believer the more you have anger accumulated more or less consciously toward him depending on what you have lived through. Since that day. I have been looking for the yoga set that Guru Jagat did. I still have not found it. So if a yogi is listening to me on the podcast and knows the set I am talking about, I would be very keen to know this set. But I do not despair. I am searching in the Kriya libraries but well, there are more than 8000 Kriyas in Kundalini Yoga so it takes a little time.
A tool to develop subtle qualities
I think this comes through the practice of senses that you are not used to practicing. In many Kriyas, you are asked to concentrate on your subtle bodies, on the things you do not see, on the vision inside your eyes, on what you say inside yourself. You are also asked to visualize your connection with the cosmos, with this blue energy…. And by repeating this, by showing you ultimately a reality that you do not usually see, it helps you in my opinion to perceive these things that you did not see before.
To give you an example, we talk about activating the chakras. When I do Kundalini yoga, I feel my chakras activating, I have the impression of activating gills like in fish because I feel it in the back. And I feel where this energy circulates, something I did not feel at all before.
So there you go, for someone who had nothing to say about Kundalini yoga, I find myself doing a rather long episode. Here is one last gift to help you experience it by yourself.
A Kundalini yoga session for more emotional serenity
If you are not able to do the 90 minutes, you can do ten minutes, fifteen minutes, half an hour, it does not matter, but I really invite you to experiment.
I did not put music in the session, but I will also put the link to my list of mantras on Spotify that you can simply listen to when you are at home or that you can use as an accompaniment during the yoga session.
Going further
If you want to explore the topic further and identify your own love patterns, you have my book S’ouvrir à l’amour available in all bookstores.
And finally, if you are ready to open up to love and transform your love life, I invite you to join my coaching program Opening up to love. You can take the Day of the Past option, a day of Somatic Deprogramming: a psycho-corporal practice to deprogram the automatic patterns of the nervous system and reprogram new relational reflexes.Sandy Kaufmann
